Recession-hit Britain has seen a massive increase in retail crime. This episode of Criminals: Caught on Camera sees shops and businesses large and small under attack from criminals.
Affluent and historic Chester is under attack from shop-lifters who come into the city to plunder its shops but now the combined forces of the police and shop security all linked by eagle-eyed CCTV operators are fighting back.
In Coventry, West Orchards shopping centre has invested in the latest state of the art CCTV cameras - capable of CSI-like close-ups - to single out criminals. In Rotherham, South Yorkshire, its shop CCTV systems that provide the evidence for police to take shoplifters off the streets.
Through course of the programme we'll see every conceivable tactic and trick criminals use to relieve shops of their goods. Some are crafty and clever but others use brute force and violence to get what they want. Machetes, guns, even explosives: you name it, criminals will use it.
In the most extreme case the London riots saw shops looted and destroyed. Although the police were largely powerless at the time, CCTV has subsequently provided the evidence that has put many of the looters behind bars.
